Biography for David Lichtenstein, Ph.D.
Member-at-Large
I am a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City and Bronxville, working with both adults and children. Along with several other psychoanalysts, I was one of the founders of Après-Coup, an independent psychoanalytic association in New York devoted to the study of Lacan and Freud. I continue to lead seminars and conducts supervision with members of this group. My work is strongly influenced by the theories of Lacan and his focus on language, creative play, and semiotics.
I also work as a research and training consultant with the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services. My work there is with the Psychology Department and especially the Learning Resource Network and focuses on the interactions between learning and psychodynamic processes. I was, some years ago, the Program Director of Child and Family Studies at SUNY Stony Brook.
My writing has reflected a comparable range of interests as my work and has included articles on psychoanalysis, semiotics, and cultural theory as well as on play, learning, and child development.
